From 2000 to 2004, Jackson was the manager of the Chemical and Biological Imaging, Sensing and Analysis Department, Sandia. Jackson was involved in chemical imaging techniques, including infrared and fluorescent imaging, point-infrared spectroscopy and analysis of hyperspectral materials and images. Imaging of DNA microarrays and analysis of polymeric materials were some of her applications. She also examined the structure-property relations of heterogeneous catalytic material.

Jackson is a Fellow of the American Chemical Society, the International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry, and the American Association for the Advancement of Science. She was elected in 2009 to the presidential succession of the American Chemical Society, serving as president-elect in 2010, president during the United Nation’s International Year of Chemistry in 2011, and immediate past president in 2012. During the three-year period following her election, she focused on expanding international collaboration, visiting more than 20 countries on five continents to meet with chemists and chemical engineers, many of them women.

In 2012, she received the AAAS Award for Science Diplomacy “for her ongoing commitment to international science cooperation to prevent the theft and diversion of chemicals through the establishment of the Chemical Security Engagement Program and for developing, nurturing, and advancing careers of scientists worldwide, with a special emphasis on women scientists in the Middle East and Southeast Asia.”
