She also learned English and Latin from his father. Hopkinson was fortunate to have had access to Derek Walcott’s writings during her childhood. She could also read Kurt Vonnegut’s works at six years old. Hopkinson’s writing is heavily influenced by the folk and fairy tales she grew up reading, including Afro-Caribbean stories such as Anansi. She also read Western works like Gulliver’s Travels and the Iliad. Hopkinson was also known for having read Shakespeare’s works around the time she was studying Homer. Hopkinson said that she was only able to live briefly in Connecticut during her father’s Yale University tenure. However, Hopkinson stated that the culture shock she experienced when she moved from Guyana to Toronto at 16 years old was something “to [which] she’s] still not fully reintegrated”. From 1977 to 2011, she lived in Toronto, before moving to Riverside (California) where she was appointed Professor of Creative Writing at University of California Riverside.

Midnight Robber was nominated in 2001 for the James R. Tipptree Jr. Memorial Award and in 2000 for the Hugo Award.

Skin Folk received the World Fantasy Award and the Sunburst Award for Canadian Literature of the Fantastic in 2003.

The Salt Roads received the Gaylactic Spectrum Award for positive exploration of queer issues in speculative fiction for 2004, presented at the 2005 Gaylaxicon. It was also nominated for the 2004 Nebula Award.
