Mohanraj was born in Namakkal in Tamil Nadu. He started playing for the Sports Authority of India (Chennai) in his early years. He was selected for the under-16 and 19 state selections but didn’t make it. He was then sent for a trial at Tata Football Academy. But Carlton Chapman (the assistant coach at Tata Football Academy) told me that he had a strong left foot and sent him to HAL, Bangalore, for a trial. Krishnaji Rao, HAL coach, finally gave him a chance.
Mohanraj, a loanee from Mumbai Tigers, signed for Sporting Clube de Goa in February 2014. On 16 February 2014, he made his debut with Sporting Goa in the I-League match against Pune F.C. He played at the Balewadi Sports Complex, where he began and finished the match. Sporting Goa won the match 1-1.

Mohanraj, who had been with HAL for a while, signed for Mohun Bagan in the 2007-08 season. Mohanraj enjoyed a successful spell with Mohun Bagan, where he won both the Indian Federation Cup (2008) and the ONGC Super Cup. He was also runner-up for the I-League 2009 in 2009.
