Najwan Ghrayib, Arabic: njwn Greyb ; Hebrew: ng’vAn gryyb ) is an Arab-Israeli ex-footballer and former manager of his local club, Maccabi Ahi Nazareth. He was his former boss at Aston Villa, John Gregory’s assistant manager at Maccabi Ahi Nazareth between 2009 and 2010.
After spending 2 more years with Hapoel Haifa, he moved back to Maccabi Ahi Nazareth where he won promotion to the Israeli Premier League. He then moved to Hapoel Petah Tikva. He retired at the end 2005/06 season after he returned to Maccabi Haifa.
Ghrayib was a highly successful player for the Israeli national football team. He made 18 appearances during his career. Ghrayib was the goal scorer in Israel’s famous 5-0 win over Austria in the qualification rounds of the UEFA Euro 2000 tournament. This was a significant result for Israel, who finished second to Spain in their qualifying group, scoring 13 points. They were guaranteed a play-off against Denmark, which would have them in the final tournament. Ghrayib, however, would not make it to the 18-man squad for either leg of the fixture. They lost 8-0.

Ghrayib rose through the Maccabi Ahi Nazareth youth ranks to make his debut at age 18. He played for Liga Alef, which is the third tier of Israeli football. He was a consistent performer and earned a move to Maccabi Haifa, an Israeli Premier League side. In 1994, he won the championship. He then spent a short time at Maccabi Petah Tikva 1995, and later moved to Hapoel Haifa 1997.
Ghrayib, who had a great season at Hapoel Haifa was interested in joining Tottenham Hotspur’s 1999-00 FA Premier League team. He even featured on the PlayStation video game FA Premier League Stars, as a Tottenham player. However, his transfer proposal fell through. After Ross MacLaren, a club scout, declared Ghrayib to be the greatest left back he’d ever seen, Aston Villa decided that it was time to strike for him. Ghrayib was transferred to Aston Villa for PS1 million. However, he saw very little first-team play and was sold by Hapoel Haifa in February 2001 for only PS150K.
Ghrayib has generated controversy by speaking out publicly about the treatment afforded Arabs in Israel and his Palestinian heritage, an issue not normally discussed in Israeli media given the contentious nature of the subject matter. In one widely publicized interview with a local Haifa newspaper (‘Kolbo’ or ‘Department’ in English), he referred to then-Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon as a ‘dog’, ‘coming from a party that hates Arabs’, and compared him to former Iraqi dictator Saddam Hussein. The response of the Israeli public to this interview was indicative of what Shor, Eran, and Yonay (2011) describe as a “shut up and play” mentality; many of the responses to this interview were either that Ghrayib should not be commenting on politics as he was simply an athlete, or that he was simply an Arab, and “…all Arabs hate us [Israelis]…so deport him to Palestine!” Soon after, Ghrayib issued subsequent statements explaining that he was “just joking” and apologizing for anyone he had offended, despite some asserting that his views reflected those of the moderate Arab population in Israel.
