She resigned in May 2008. Susan Herman, a Brooklyn Law School constitutional law professor, was selected by the ACLU to replace her.
In 2000, she appeared in Dirty Pictures. Strossen was the guest star of Eve Ensler’s play, The Vagina Monologues, at the National Theatre in Washington D.C., in October 2001.

Strossen was born in Jersey City. Strossen has said that her family’s experiences inspired her to become a civil liberties lawyer. Strossen said that her father was a Holocaust survivor, and that her mother was a protester in World War I. He arrived in this country as an immigrant and was verbally abused for refusing to fight in it. His official sentence for being conscientious objector was to be made to stand in front of the Hudson County courthouse, New Jersey, so that passersby could puke on him. Strossen earned her B.A. Harvard College, 1972 Phi Beta Kappa. Strossen received her B.A. Harvard Law School, 1975 magna cum Laude. She was an editor for the Harvard Law Review while in law school.
Strossen was a lawyer in Minneapolis and New York City for nine-years before becoming a professor of law at New York Law School.
In 2019, her book, “Hate: Why We Should Resist It with Free Speech, Not Censorship”, was chosen as the Washington University in St. Louis Common Reading book. On August 26th, Strossen delivered a keynote address at the university.
