N. Chandrababu Naidu is one of the most popular and richest Politician who was born on April 20, 1950 in Naravari Palle, Andhra Pradesh, India. When Naidu was Chief Minister, he became the brand ambassador for Araku products and devised a unique way to promote Araku Coffee and Visakhapatnam’s Araku Valley. Araku coffee has a long history. The British introduced coffee in 1898 to the East Godavari area of Pamuluru. It was then that it spread to Araku. The Andhra Pradesh Forest Department established coffee plantations in the valley after independence. In 1956, the Coffee Board of India named Girijan Cooperative Corporation to promote the coffee through local tribal farmers. The Naidu Government and SpiceJet (third largest airline in India by domestic passenger carried) offered to provide Araku organic brew to their passengers. SpiceJet’s air hostesses would make announcements about the brand, its significance, as well as about the coffee plantations of Araku Valley. A scheme of scratch cards was created to increase tourist visits to Araku Valley. Every passenger would receive a card and two lucky people would get free accommodation in Araku Valley. The tourism department would also pay the airline for promotion of Araku Coffee. They were so well-received that Naidu gave them to Russian and Korean delegates. The coffee was also promoted at all international investor meetings organized by the state. Naidu once stated that Araku Valley’s tribal coffee was competing with Sumatran and Columbian coffees on the international market. Tribal youth are being provided with employment opportunities through large-scale coffee procurement and dedicated promotion. Naidu made coffee production his personal project and promised to increase coffee cultivation by another 100,000 acres. This would also boost the income of the tribal farmers of the valley. While it is planned that the next set retail stores will open in New York and Tokyo, the company has already opened its first retail shop in Paris’ Le Marais.
In 1978, Naidu was elected a Congress (I), member of the Andhra Pradesh legislative Assembly (MLA). He was a beneficiary of the 20% party quota that allowed youth to run for office. At the age of 28, Naidu was appointed minister for technical education and cinematography in T. Anjaiah’s government. He was the youngest minister to be appointed in the Congress (I).
In 1982, N. T. Rama Rao formed the Telugu Desam Party (TDP) and swept the assembly polls held in 1983. Naidu, who was then still in the INC, was defeated by a TDP candidate in Chandragiri. He joined the TDP soon after.
Naidu showed his political skills in August 1984, when Nadendla Bhaskara Rao staged a coup against N. T. Rama Rao. He rallied the TDP MLAs together and paraded them before the President of India. N. T. Rama Rao was reinstated as the Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh 31 days later. Impressed with his son-in- law’s manoeuvre, Rao appointed Naidu as the General Secretary of the party and he began playing an important role in the TDP after Nadendla Rao’s coup attempt. Later, when N. T. Rama Rao married Lakshmi Parvathi, Naidu took over the TDP legislative party predicting the problems in the party and became the Chief Minister of united Andhra Pradesh.
Naidu became interested in politics as an early age. He joined the Indian Youth Congress in Chandragiri near Tirupati, Chittoor district, to serve as a student leader. He became close to Sanjay Gandhi, the Indian Youth Congress president after 1975’s emergency.
