Herbert Bate Distinguished Lecturer in Medicine, Microbiology, Immunology and Epidemiology at The University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill. He also serves as co-chair of National Institutes of Health’s HIV Prevention Trials Network.

Cohen is a Fellow of the American College of Physicians and the Infectious Diseases Society of American. He was elected to the Institute of Medicine in 2012. He is the editor of Sexually Transmitted Diseases.

Science magazine named treatment as prevention and HPTN 052 its scientific breakthrough of the year in December 2011. Cohen received a bachelor’s degree from James H. Bowen High school in Chicago. His M.D. was earned at the University of Illinois Champaign-Urbana. He received his medical degree from Rush Medical College, Chicago. He also completed residency training in internal medicine at University of Michigan.
