Mykola Petrovych Budnik Ukrainian: Mikola Petrovich Bodnik was a traditional performer and luthier in the Kobzar tradition. He was involved in authentic reconstruction and recreation of historical folk instruments and in the movement to practice authentic performance on Ukrainian folk instruments. Budnyk was also a poet and painter. Budnyk was born in 1954 at Skolobiv in the Zhytomyr area, near Khoroshiv. He died in Irpin’ in Kyiv on January 16, 2001.
1980 – Heorhy Takachenko began learning to play the traditional kobza and bandura with Heorhy Kushpet and a small group: Victor Mishalow and Mykola Tovkaylo, among others. He started producing old-style bandura, kobza, and lira by using traditional technology. He assumed the leadership role of this organization after Tkachenko’s passing.

Budnyk studied traditional kobzar performances from Heorhy Takachenko in 1978. He then made his first traditional bandura. Tkachenko taught him how to make authentic instruments and he made many banduras. Later, he made many other Ukrainian folk instruments and began teaching others how to make them. He co- created the Kobzar guild, which revived traditional performances such as street-performance (busking). (Ukrainian pronunciation: kobzariuvannia). Many of the repertoire, including the para-religious and epic psalms, were also reintroduced.
