Mustafa Al-Sheikh is one of the most popular and richest Military Officer who was born on June 2, 1957 in Syria. Mustafa Ahmad al Sheikh was born in Atme in northwestern Syria’s Idlib Governorate on June 2, 1957. Sheikh enlisted in the Syrian Armed Forces military academy in 1976 and was promoted to lieutenant. He was a battalion commander in the Syrian Army and was also a member the Arab Deterrent Force, Tripoli, Lebanon, between 1979 and 1983. After the ADF’s mandate ended in Lebanon, Sheikh was assigned to the northern command of the Syrian Army as a security officer. This position he held until December 2011.

Asaad, Sheikh and the FSA headquarters were previously located in Turkey. The FSA’s headquarters was moved to rebel-held areas of northwestern Syria by Asaad and sheikh in late September 2012.
In an interview in February 2012, Mustafa al-Sheikh said he battled with his conscience before defecting, mindful of his 37 years of service in the Syrian Army and of possible retribution against his extended family. He said the final straw had been a sexual assault by soldiers who took turns raping a young bride in a village near Hama.
Mustafa Ahmad al-Sheikh (Arabic: مصطفى أحمد الشيخ ) was the founder and head of the Free Syrian Army’s Higher Military Council in 2012, during the Syrian Civil War. He was a brigadier general in the Syrian Army prior to his defection in December 2011.
Al-Sheikh stated, “We need very urgent intervention outside of the security council because of the Russian veto.” We want a coalition that is similar to the one in Kosovo and Ivory Coast. Al-Sheikh stated that government opponents had lost faith in the United Nations Security Council. Damascus is a strong backer of this council. In November 2012, Sheikh said in another interview that “if there is no quick decision to support our cause, we will all become terrorists.”

On 5 February 2012, Mustafa al-Sheikh announced the formation of the Supreme Revolutionary Military Council for the Liberation of Syria. This move was condemned by the Free Syrian Army. Colonel Riad al-Asaad, commander of the FSA, rejected Sheikh’s formation and stated that Sheikh “represents himself. He has nothing to do with the Free Syrian Army.” Malik al-Kurdi, a deputy commander in the FSA, called Sheikh’s announcement “a knife in the back of the revolution”. Bassma Kodmani, spokeswomen of the Syrian National Council, stated that the SNC was “wary” of Sheikh’s announcement, and acknowledged tensions between Sheikh and the FSA. Lama al-Atassi, a Syrian opposition figure affiliated with the FSA, also condemned Sheikh’s announcement.
