His maiden ODI wicket was Gordon Greenidge. Bennett’s efforts were not enough to stop West Indies reaching their target of 241, with seven wickets and over five runs in hand. After returning to the SCG, Bennett took 1/44 of his ten overs and removed Brendon Kuruppu. The Australian batsmen won a six-wicket victory over Sri Lanka. After Bennett’s success in earlier matches, Bennett was outmatched by the West Indian batsmen in Brisbane. Bennett was out for the first time in an ODI and scored three runs as Australia were defeated for 191. He was not required to bat as the Australians completed a six-wicket victory. He then took 1/33 from his ten overs as the tourists defeated Bombay before returning to Australia.

During the winter of 1984, Bennett travelled to England to play in the Lancashire League for Ramsbottom Cricket Club as their overseas professional. He started relatively slowly, taking 12 wickets in his first five innings with the ball.

The bespectacled Bennett, at 26 years old, was unable to make it to first- class until his debut in the Sheffield Shield season 1982-83. He took 2/74 in 52 overs against Western Australia. This included 25 maidens. His victims were Test players Tony Mann and Craig Serjeant. In a high scoring draw, he also got an unbeaten 30, He took 4/55 in 40.1 overs against Tasmania in another economical performance.
