Gray was a columnist in many publications including Time Out magazine and the Sunday Correspondent. She also wrote a column for the Sunday Herald. In 2001, she was named Columnist of Year at the Scottish press awards. She is a regular contributor to The Guardian.

She wrote a history of Glasgow’s Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum to mark its re-opening in 2006. She appears on the BBC Two programme Grumpy Old Women.

Gray presented Art Is Dead – Long Live TV. This programme sparked a controversy when it was discovered that the series, covering the work of five artists, was a spoof.

After her time in the punk band The Family Von Trapp she was an interviewer on the Channel 4 alternative pop show The Tube. She presented Frocks on the Box (1987-1988) and The Media Show (1987-1989) for the same channel. In 1983 and 1984, she was briefly a DJ at Edinburgh’s Radio Forth. She was a frequent stand-in presenter at BBC Radio 1 throughout the eighties, including for John Peel. She was also a regular presenter on BBC Radio 4 for Start the Week, in Russell Harty’s absence, and during Jeremy Paxman’s leave.

In 1989, she founded her own production company called Gallus Besom. (Besom is a Scots Language term for contempt for a surly woman or intentionally awkward woman through a synecdoche. Ideal World was renamed to it in 1993. In 2004, it merged with Wark Clements (the company owned by Kirsty Wark, her husband Alan Clements), to create IWC Media. In 2005, the partners sold the company to RDF Media for approximately PS12 million.

In 2005, she became Patron of the Scottish charity Trees for Life which is working to restore the Caledonian Forest. She is also a patron of the Craighalbert Centre, a conductive education school in Cumbernauld near Glasgow. She currently serves as a trustee on the following boards: The British Museum, The Glasgow Science Centre, The Scottish Maritime Museum, The Lighthouse, The Children’s Parliament, and pledged support for Action Earth. In January 2009 she became the first patron of Scotland’s Additional Support Needs Mediation Forum, RESOLVE:ASL.
