Mukesh Shamsunder Narula, a former Indian cricketer, is currently the Canadian team’s coach. His domestic cricket career, as an all-rounder with Baroda, spanned between 1985 and 1996. It also included matches for West Zone in both the Duleep & Deodhar Trophies. Before being named coach of Canada in August 2014 Narula was briefly the senior coach at Baroda and also coached the Canadian under-19 soccer team.
Narula was one the most powerful bowlers in Baroda during the 1990s. He took 20 wickets in the 1992-93 season, 17 in the 1993-94 season, and 17 during the 1991-92 season. He was most prominent for his bowling performances during this period, with 5/48 against West Zone in the 1991-92 Duleep Trophy final. However, this was not enough to stop his team from losing the game by 236 runs. Six/92 (against Saurashtra, 1992-93), six/101 (against Maharashtra 1993-94), and six/80 (against Saurashtra 1994-95 were his returns in later seasons. The career-best performance was 6/92. Narula scored 320 runs in the 1993-94 season, which included eight Ranji Trophy and Duleep Trophy matches. He averaged 40.00 runs for the season. His only run above 50 came in the Ranji quarterfinal against Punjab. This innings was scored from 8th in the batting order. It consisted of 131 runs from 343 balls and took almost seven hours. Narula was 34 when he made his final first-class appearance for Baroda in the 1996-97 season. His career ended with 2,373 runs, 104 wickets and 57 first- class matches. Narula was a professional player for the Drummond Cricket Club during the Indian off-season.
In February 2020, he was named in Canada’s squad for the Over-50s Cricket World Cup in South Africa. However, the tournament was cancelled during the third round of matches due to the coronavirus pandemic.
Narula was a right-arm medium pacer. He took only five wickets during his first four Ranji Trophy seasons and two wickets in one innings. In 1989-1990, Narula took 15 wickets in six Ranji matches, an average of 27.26. Baroda’s top wicket-taker was Narula. Only Shaukat Dukanwala (a future United Arab Emirates International ODI player) took more. Narula, who was out for a duck against Bombay, took his maiden five-wicket win, 5/75. He also opened the bowling alongside Rashid Patel, an ex-Test player. He was out for a duck in the match against Bombay, but he had scored what would be his highest career score, an innings that he managed to score 176 runs in just six hours. Narula’s innings at the time was the highest ever by a Baroda number six batsman. However, it was eclipsed by Kiran More’s 180 runs during the 1996-97 season.

He played in many inter-university matches while he was at the University of Baroda. Narula was the first to make his Ranji Trophy debut in 1985-86 for Baroda’s senior team. In his fourth and final match against Saurashtra, in January 1986, he scored a maiden century. He came in seventh place in the batting order and scored 161 runs with Sanjay Harzare for the sixth wicket. This is still a record in Baroda/Saurashtra matches as of April 2015. Narula, who scored 105 in the Ranji Trophy fixture against Saurashtra the next season, set another Baroda–Saurashtra match record with his 209-run partnership with Tushar Aroth. This was his only century in the 1986-87 season. He also scored 102 against Gujarat during the 1987-88 seasons.
Narula’s Ranji Trophy performance during the 1989-1990 season earned him a maiden Duleep Trophy entry. He was a part of the West Zone team that played South Zone in Bangalore’s M. Chinnaswamy stadium. His performance was minimal and South Zone won 665 to West Zone’s 465. Narula was again seen for West Zone in the Deodhar Trophy limited-overs, but this time he was not in the Duleep Trophy. In the quarter-final against Central Zone, he scored 3/37 in nine overs. He then took another wicket against North Zone in the semi-final and finished the tournament with 3/57 against East Zone. This was the final match of the tournament, which saw the West Zone win. He was a future India captain and he caught Sourav Ganguly for 125. His West Zone teammates were Ravi Shastri (Sanjay Manjrekar), Dilip Vengsarkar and Sachin Tendulkar.
Having worked in management positions with Indian Petrochemicals Corporation Limited (IPCL) outside of cricket, Narula’s first major coaching role came when he was appointed coach of the Baroda under-19 side for the 2007–08 season. Baroda won the Cooch Behar Trophy (the under-19 equivalent of the Ranji Trophy) for the first time during that season, and he subsequently secured a role as batting consultant with the Mumbai Indians for the 2009 IPL season. Following the resignation of Paras Mhambrey in January 2010, Narula (previously an assistant to Mhambrey) was appointed senior coach of Baroda for the remainder of the 2009–10 season. He was re-appointed senior coach for the 2010–11 season, also coaching West Zone during the same season, and led Baroda to the final against Rajasthan, its best finish since the 2001–02 season. Despite his team’s performance, Narula resigned as coach at the end of the season to take up a position at a Toronto cricket academy. The coach of the Canadian under-19 team at the 2011 Under-19 World Cup Qualifier in Ireland, Narula was appointed head coach of the senior Canadian national team in August
