He is a professor of computer science and engineering at Shahjalal University of Science and Technology (SUST). As of January 2018, he is the head of Electrical and Electronic Engineering department.

Iqbal passed the SSC exam from Bogra Zilla School in 1968 and the HSC exam from Dhaka College in 1970. He earned his bachelor’s in physics from the University of Dhaka in 1976 and then went to the University of Washington to earn his Ph.D. in 1982.

In 1978, he married Yasmeen Hque. He and Yasmeen Haque became parents to Nabil and Yeshim.
