Soomro is a descendant of a powerful Sindhi feudal family, which has been actively involved in national politics since 1923. Ahmed Mian Soomro was his father and was Deputy Speaker in the West Pakistan Assembly. He also served as a senator and helped establish the Senate Committee Systems. Khan Bahadur Haji Moula Bux Soomro, his great-grandson, is also a politician. He served as the acting Prime Minister of Pakistan from 16 November 2007 through 25 March 2008. This was to supervise the 2008 General Elections. On 18 August 2008, Pervez Musharraf resigned.
As required by the constitution, Soomro (in his position as Chairman of the Senate) automatically became President on 18 August 2008, upon the resignation of Pervez Musharraf. The constitution also required that a new President be elected by Parliament within 30 days.
Soomro was elected caretaker prime minster on 15 November 2007 after Shaukat Aziz’s term expired. This came before a new parliamentary elections. President Pervez Musharraf sworn Soomro in as prime minister on 16 November. His term was ended when President Pervez Musharraf sworn Syed Yousaf Raza Gilani as prime minister.
