Mugison and Runa Esradottir met after he returned to Isafjordur, in 2002. Their current residence is in Sudavik, Westfjords. They live next to Runa’s mother. Mugison is very attached to his family. His wife plays on his records, as does his extended family. Since he moved to London, he had been far from his family and friends. He made a manifesto to Mugimama that said that everyone who works on the album should be in close proximity to the musician.

After many tours during 2003/4 Mugison returned to Isafjordur and was asked to create the soundtrack to an Icelandic Film Niceland. Having no studio to create, the town kindly lent him the church in which he could record.

A fortuitous chance encounter with Gruff Rhys from Super Furry Animals in London during 2003 led to Mugison Supporting the Welsh band at The Royal Festival Hall. This was a particular highlight during his early career.

Mugison completed a BA in Recording Art at Middlesex University SAE in London, 2000. Mugison experimented with music creation on computers while he was in the UK. Mugison was interested in portable music and visited an Apple Store to inquire when the laptop would be large enough to play music. However, a salesperson told him that they wouldn’t be able to ever make music on a laptop. In interviews, Bjork predicted that all music would soon be created on laptops. Mugison was inspired by Bjork’s vision and determined to follow the right path. He bought a second-hand Apple 3G PowerBook for the sole purpose of creating music. Digigram’s VX Pocket Soundcard was released during Mugison’s studies in London. Mugison couldn’t afford to rent a room for the remainder of his semester because of the high cost of the prized possession. He slept on the sofas of friends for the rest. He began work on his debut album, Lonely Mountain.

While working on Hrisey in 1990, he witnessed a poet/musician perform a gig that was a turning point in his personal life. Kjartan H Gretarsson was the artist in question. Kjartan H Gretarsson’s mysterious appearance, and most importantly his hair, fascinated Mugison so much that he asked him to teach Mugison how he was an artist. Kjartan agreed to meet with Mugison every Wednesday to share his knowledge and to expose him to all sorts of literature and music, including Frank Zappa and The Beat Poets. Mugison was told by Kjartan that this knowledge was vital as it could be used to have conversations with people from all parts of the globe, regardless of where they were located. A field trip to learn how to view women was another aspect of the teacher/pupil situation. This friendship led to a lifetime friendship with Kjartan Gretarsson, who created the cover art for Mugiboogie.

Mugison, who had learned the tricks of the trade through Kjartan H. Gretarsson at age 17, moved to Reykjavik in 1994. In Utero was released by Nirvana in 1993, and Debut was released by Bjork in 1995. These albums were hugely influential in Mugison’s life. He attended Hamrahlidaskoli Menntaskoli. This school was chosen because so many artists had graduated there, including Pall Oskar, who Mugison was a big fan of.

The Mirstumenti is an electronic music instrument conceived by Mugison and his sound engineer. The idea for the Mirstument came during a tour in Europe in 2003, shortly after Sonar 2003. At the time Mugison was a one-man-band. Mugison and Palli (the sound-engineer) were fantasising about an alternative setup which didn’t involve just putting a lot of controllers on a table, hooking up adapters and cables to all the midi stuff. They thought it should be more of an instrument, so that people could see what was going on, and with just have one on/off button.
