He advocates democratic fundamentals in both Japanese society and politics. On January 2012 he went to work at the headquarters of the Chūkyō Dokuritsu Senryaku Honbu which seeks to abolish Aichi Prefecture and elevate Nagoya to metropolis-level status as Tokyo already is. He expressed his sympathy to Koichi Kato when his home was burned down and on the occasion argued for a reappraisal of his political record.
He frequently writes articles about Japanese history, often focusing on World War II. He has criticized the attitude of mass media towards history, including the Asahi Shimbun, which he attacked in a book he co-authored with Yoshinori Kbayashi. Izawa is a member of the Japanese Society for History Textbook Reform, and is a staunch opponent to the Nanjing massacre. His books were among the ones that were confiscated by the librarians in 2001 at Nishi Library in Funabashi. The Supreme Court ordered that the library pay compensation in 2005.

Motohiko Izawa graduated at Chitose Tokyo Metropolitan High School (now Roka Tokyo Metropolitan High School) and at the Waseda University faculty of law. His story Tosaku no Hofuku (“Retaliation for Perversion”) was submitted to the Edogawa Rampo Prize. He joined TBS in 1980 as a news reporter after graduation. His 1980 novel Sarumaru Genshi-ko (“Illusionary travel around Sarumaru”) was published by TBS. He was at that time working in the politics section. Sarumaru Genshi-ko can be described as both detective fiction as well as a historical novel. The protagonist travels through time with medication and then, in a science-fiction twist, he merges with Shinobu Orikuchi to solve crimes. Izawa quit TBS in 1985 to become a full time writer.
Izawa’s novels tend to be on the historical mystery plane. He weaves modern- day crime into his detective fiction, while using the mysteries of history for his themes. He also writes pure historical fiction and develops his own theories about history, especially since 1992, when he published the successive installments of Gyakusetsu no Nihonshi (“Paradoxical Japan History”)).
In 2010 Izawa also worked on a committee to commemorate the 1300th anniversary of the moving of the Japanese capital to Heijo-kyo.
