Stephen Morgan Fisher, an English keyboard player and composer was born in Mayfair, London, on January 1, 1950. He is best known for his time as a member Mott the Hoople’s early 1970s band. His career spans a broad range of musical activities and he continues to be active in the music business. He has also ventured into photography in recent years.
Morgan began performing solo improvisation concerts every month at Superdeluxe, Tokyo’s cutting-edge music/art club. Morgan’s Organ was his name for this concert series and he has begun to make available live recordings as a download. Morgan’s Organ at Home, his private studio in Tokyo, has continued the series since March 2013.
Fisher has maintained a lifelong interest in photography and in recent years has been holding an increasing number of solo exhibitions of his work in Japan and abroad. He has evolved a technique of abstract photography which he calls Light Art, influenced by the photograms of Man Ray and László Moholy-Nagy, by pendulum-created harmonographs, and in particular by the abstract cinema of Len Lye, Norman McLaren and Oskar Fischinger. Unlike most so-called “light painting,” where images are created by “drawing” with flashlights, etc., in front of a camera with an open shutter, Fisher’s light artworks are in the main created by moving the camera in front of various natural and man-made light sources (fireworks, sunlight on water, city illuminations, etc.). Many of his light artworks may be seen at his art website, and several were used in the booklet of his March 2009 album release Non Mon, a collection of his most well-known TV commercial compositions (Japan, DefSTAR/Sony Records). His light artworks are on the front cover and in a seven-page spread in the Winter 2010 edition of Artworks Magazine (Carmel, California). In Spring 2014 they occupied 20 pages of the photograph magazine Victor published by the Hasselblad camera company. He exhibited in the spring of 2013 at the Hasselblad Gallery in Tokyo.
Fisher left the United States in 1985 to live and work in Japan. He began making ambient and improvised songs. He was a TV commercial music writer, and wrote or arranged songs for Cat Power, Jose Feliciano (Zap Mama), Swing Out Sister, Karin Krog, Karin Krog and Jose Feliciano. He has collaborated with Japanese artists such as Yoko Ono (Dip in the Pool), The Boom, Heat Wave and Haruomi Hosono (Kokoo). He also scored the Japanese animation/live-action hybrid film Twilight of the Cockroaches (1987), and the documentary A Zen Life. D.T. Suzuki (2006).
