He joined the Mugwumps in 1884 to voice his support for Grover Ohio over James G. Blaine during that year’s presidential elections.

His entire life was spent in Boston, Roxbury, and Lincoln, Massachusetts. Five children were born to Gertrude Cutts’ marriage.
