Moon Chung-in Biography

Moon Chung-in is one of the most popular and richest Diplomat who was born on March 25, 1951 in Jeju City, Jeju, South Korea. Dr. Dr. Moon studied Chinese philosophy at Yonsei University. He then went to the United States to study international relations at University of Maryland in 1978. There he received his master’s and doctoral degrees, and he was appointed to his first teaching position at Williams College in 1984. He taught at the University of Kentucky, Lexington from 1985 to 1994. In 1994, he returned to Yonsei University as a professor, where he taught until his retirement in 2016.

Moon was South Korea’s president between 1998 and 2003. He also served as an adviser to Roh Moohyun (who held the presidency from 2003 to 2008). During the Roh Moo hyun administration, he was the Ambassador for International Security Affairs of South Korea’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade (MOFAT), and the Chairman of the Presidential Committee on Northeast Asian Cooperation Initiative. This is a cabinet-level position.

Moon has held many roles. Moon was an advisor to many agencies of the South Korean government including the National Security Council and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade. Moon was one of the original architects of the Sunshine Policy and advocates for the revival of the engagement strategy, which seeks to thaw relations with North Korea’s Government and Government. Moon believes that all other options, including military action, sanctions, pressures and containment, have failed. Moon blames the US administrations, especially that of George W. Bush, who he believes has disrupted the Sunshine Policy’s effects. The policy had some initial successes, but was eventually cancelled in 2008.
