Monte Kenton Solberg PC, born September 17, 1958, is a Canadian politician and businessman. Solberg was a former member of Parliament and represented the riding of Medicine Hat in Canada’s House of Commons. He is also a member of Conservative Party of Canada. He served as Minister of Citizenship and Immigration, and then later as Minister of Human Resources and Social Development. He was also a Critic for Foreign Affairs and National Revenue as well as Human Resources Development.

Many thought Solberg would run for the Conservative party’s leadership, but he surprised everyone when he announced that he was quitting politics on September 4, 2008. He also said that he would not be running in the 40th Canadian federal elections.

Solberg was named the new minister for Human Resources and Social Development in the cabinet shuffle of January 4, 2007. She replaced Diane Finley.

In 1993 and 1997, he was elected as a Reform Party Member (MP) and in 2000 as a Canadian Alliance MP. Solberg was among 13 Canadian Alliance MPs suspended in 2001 for criticizing Stockwell Day’s leadership. For the summer, he was an Independent Alliance MP. He joined the Democratic Representative Caucus (September) and returned to the Alliance in March 2002. He was also one the four Alliance MPs that agreed to join the Progressive Conservative caucus (to keep their party status) following the December 9, 2003 creation of the merged Conservative Party. The Canadian Alliance and Progressive Conservative parliamentary caucuses had not been officially merged until several weeks later. In 2004, he was reelected as a Conservative MP.

Solberg maintained a prominent blog and, in 2005, it is believed that he made history by blogging from the House of Commons using his BlackBerry immediately after the passage of Bill C-38 which legalized same-sex marriage. Solberg opposed the bill. Solberg won Medicine Hat again in 2006 with 79.7%, which was the second highest winning percentage for the 2006 federal elections. After being named Minister of Citizenship and Immigration, he stopped updating his blog.
