Access to his father’s records collection, which included works by Magic Sam, Earl Hooker, and B.B., helped him musically. King, as well as more rock- oriented recordings by the Beatles or the Rolling Stones. Albert King’s music was what attracted the youngster towards blues. He learned how to play guitar when he was eight years old. His parents gave him access to blues clubs and jams in Boston three years later. He also learned from Luther “Guitar Junior”, Johnson and Ronnie Earl. Welch was present at the 1992 opening of the House of Blues in Cambridge, Massachusetts. Dan Aykroyd was the club’s coowner. Welch changed his nickname to “Monster Mike” after he became “Little Mikey”. The Monster Mike Welch Band was created within a matter of minutes with Jon Ross on bass, George Lewis on guitar and Warren Grant on drums. The 1995 Boston Music Awards named them the “Best Blues Act”. This line-up released three albums on Rounder Records (a Tone-Cool subsidiary). These Blues Are Mine (1996) and Axe to Grind (1997) were his first albums. People magazine quoted him as saying that “being an adolescent has more than enough blues to handle.” Welch performed at the Notodden Blues Festival in 1997. Catch Me was Welch’s first album, and it was released in 1998 while he was still a teenager. Catch Me saw David Hull play bass guitar and compose one song. Early attention was not without cost. Welch explained that he struggled with this all the time. He said that he believes it was a major reason why all my early records were original songs. It wasn’t because it wasn’t my desire to record covers of my favourite songs. I did so because I felt the need to offer something different than simple guitar acrobatics in a novelty act . Some of my decisions back then were compensation for not wanting being seen as shallow or immature.
Welch was a contributor to the 2003 Severn Records album, Sugar Ray & The Bluetones Featuring Monster Mike Welch. That was the start of a long-lasting working relationship with Welch.
Living Blues magazine cited “Welch is becoming an all-around guitar master.” Welch has performed and recorded with Duke Robillard, Nick Moss, Johnny Winter, Darrell Nulisch and the Knickerbocker All-Stars, which featured among others, Jimmie Vaughan. Welch has also appeared on recordings by the Mannish Boys and contributed to Fifty Shades of Blue (2015), by Anthony Geraci and the Boston Blues All Stars.
