Monique Maria Bernadette Bretter (born 26 January 1961 in Nijmegen, Netherlands) is a Dutch neuroepidemiologist. She is the Director of Population Health Sciences, German Center for Neurodegenerative Diseases, Professor of Population Health Sciences, University of Bonn and Adjunct Professor of epidemiology at Harvard School of Public Health, Boston, Massachusetts. Since 2015, she has been an international member of the Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences.

Breteler was awarded a fellowship of The Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences in 1998 for her research on vascular factors and Alzheimer’s disease. In 2003, she received a VICI grant from the Netherlands Organisation for Scientific Research for future population-based neuroimaging studies.

In 2012 Breteler spoke at the Falling Walls conference in Berlin, according to the official Falling Walls organization to “focus attention on a new age of health research aimed at optimizing brain function and quality of life throughout the entire life span”.

In July 2012 Breteler received the “2012 Bengt Winblad Lifetime Achievement Award”, which is presented annually by the US-American Alzheimer’s Association at the “Alzheimer’s Association International Conference” to honor researchers who have made extraordinary contributions to Alzheimer’s disease research.

Breteler was involved in the Rotterdam Study for more than 20 years. This prospective population-based study on age-related disorders and their causes has been ongoing since 1990. She also initiated the Rotterdam Scan Study which is a prospective population based neuroimaging research that involves more than 5000 individuals. Breteler’s research in Rotterdam revealed a link between life style factors, brain diseases, and vascular disease. She has also been extremely successful at linking epidemiological data to brain scan information.

Breteler earned her medical degree at the University of Nijmegen in 1987 and her doctorate in epidemiology at the Erasmus University Rotterdam (in 1993).

In 1989, she joined Erasmus University Rotterdam’s Department of Epidemiology to create the neurologic component of the Rotterdam Study. This large cohort study of chronic diseases in the elderly focuses on neurologic disorders. She was head of neuroepidemiology from 1995 to 2011. Since 2011 she is Director of Population Health Sciences at the German Center for Neurodegenerative Diseases (DZNE) and Professor of Population Health Sciences at the University of Bonn. She also holds an appointment in the Department of Epidemiology of the Harvard School of Public Health, Boston, MA, since 2002, where she is adjunct professor of epidemiology.
