She also produces documentaries. Her films explore many different interests all over the globe. Her documentaries cover a variety of subjects, including queer topics, one woman’s efforts in Rio de Janeiro to help street children, and the culinary arts of Taiwan.

As a media associate, she worked in Marburg, Frankfurt and Berlin. Treut received her doctorate in Philology at the University of Marburg in 1984. Together with Elfi Micksch, she co-founded Hyena Filmproduktion in 1984. From there, she began producing, writing and directing her own independent feature films. The year after, Treut’s feature film debut was with Seduction: The Cruel Woman. This film explored sadomasochistic and sexy sex practices. Treut spent some time in America in the 1980s. Treut spent time in San Francisco and New York City and met Annie Sprinkle and Werner Schroeter. She also produced some of her films. These relationships resulted in the documentaries Annie (documentary-short), My Father Is Coming (documentary-short) and Encounter With Werner Schroeter(documentary short).

Treut has been lecturing, teaching and curating retrospectives on her work since 1990 at several colleges in the United States (Vasser Hollins Dartmouth), at art institutions (SFAI), and universities (IU Bloomington and UI Chicago, UC San Diego, UC San Diego, and Cornell U ).
