Mazlan disappeared on July 2, 1993, after she had taken RM 300,000. Mona is reported to have gone on a shopping spree after the murder. She bought a Mercedes-Benz, and got a facelift. The murder took place between 10:00 PM on 18 July 1993 and midnight. Police found Mazlan’s corpse on 22 July 1993. Mona, Juraimi, and her husband were arrested. A highly publicized trial was then started. A 7-person jury tried them in Temerloh High Court. The jury trial was canceled on 1 January 1995. They were all found guilty by the High Court and sentenced to death by hanging. Mona and the other defendants filed appeals to Federal Court. In 1999, the court rejected their appeals and upheld Mona’s death sentence. The three convicts tried to get a pardon from Pahang’s Pardons Board of Pahang. This was their last chance of redemption. The board refused to grant clemency. On the night of their execution, they were served a last meal at KFC. Juraimi, Affandy, and Mona were executed at Kajang Prison on Tuesday 2 November 2001. According to a prison official, the trio did not regret the pre-dawn execution.
Mona displayed strange behavior throughout the trial. She smiled constantly, was cheerful and often posed for photographers. Mona wore bright, colourful dresses. She said, “Looks like I have many admirers.” According to reports, she also uttered “aku takkan matri” during her execution. This translated into “I will not die” and she was calm and smiling. Tan Bee Lee, a Malaysian drug trafficking offender, was the last female execution in Malaysia.
In 2006, a film by Dain Iskandar Said entitled Dukun was widely assumed to be based on Mona Fandey. The public screening of this highly anticipated film was constantly pushed back, most likely due to concerns relating to the contents of the film, the relationship with Mona Fandey, and the implications for her family.
