He is an American ex-professional ice hockey player who played 12 seasons in the National Hockey League with the Winnipeg Jets and the Edmonton Oilers.

Mantha was a Hershey Bears player in 1992-93. He has since coached teams with the ECHL’s Columbus Chill. From 2000 to 2004, he coached the Ann Arbor, Michigan-based junior USA team. Mantha was appointed the Detroit Gladiators’ head coach in 2005. However, the league did not make it to the ice. Instead, he was the Windsor Spitfires’ head coach and general manger. The Spitfires were fined $35,000 for gross misconduct during the Akim Aliu/Steve Downie scandal. Mantha was then the general manager, and the head coach of the French River Rapids in the NOJHL. He was appointed interim head coach of Saginaw Spirit OHL on February 16, 2016. This was his second trip behind Spirit bench. At the end of that season, he was fired. He was appointed the Brookings Blizzard’s head coach and general manger in 2017. Mantha was retained by the Blizzard for one season, after it moved to St. Cloud Blizzard retired in 2020, but he was retained by the Blizzard for one season.

Ryan Mantha was Mantha’s nephew and was drafted by New York Rangers as the fourth round in the 2014 NHL Entry Draft. Ryan is currently a prospect with the Edmonton Oilers, despite being sidelined due to an eye injury.

Mantha played his first hockey game for the Toronto Marlboros, an Ontario Hockey Association team.
