Isom started training as a placekicker back in January 2011. She was seen at the LSU Tigers indoor training facility practicing kickoffs in September 2011. She trained with Joey Crappel, senior snapper, and DJ Howard, senior kicker. Isom also participated in strength training with the football team in the summer 2011. She did not practice full-contact kick, but she tweeted that she had made a 51-yard field goal with Drew Alleman, Tigers punter Brad Wing and a Tigers kicker.

Isom was trying to be the second woman since Katie Hnida to play NCAA Division I football. During the spring tryouts, Isom was not selected to continue tryouts. However, she continued training for the position and tried again in August 2012. She again failed to make the team.

Isom was the Homecoming Queen in Tiger Stadium’s Tigers game against the Western Kentucky Hilltoppers during the 2011 LSU Tigers football season. Isom was the first LSU athlete to be named Homecoming Queen.

A retired Navy paramedic helped her. Isom shared her story about encountering the Holy Spirit during the wreckage, and how she placed her faith in Jesus Christ. Isom traveled extensively to share her story, both nationally and internationally, after her recovery. In 2012, she began a speaking ministry and was recognized for her inspiring story of faith and struggle as well as her remarkable athletic journey. Isom, her boyfriend of 15months, announced her engagement on February 11, 2014. Isom married Jeremiah Aiken on September 13, 2014. They welcomed their daughter Auden on December 11, 2015. Baker Publishing Group signed her a 2-book contract in 2015. Her first book, Wreck my Life: A Journey from Broken to Bold was published on August 2, 2016. It quickly became a New York Times bestseller and debuted at #11 in Sports.

Isom competed at Lassiter High in Georgia. Her career record over three seasons was 40 wins, 9 losses and 1 tie. She was named The Atlanta Journal- Constitution player of the year as a senior.
