Santner was selected in the New Zealand limited overs squad for the tour to England in April 2015. On 9 June 2015, he made his One Day International debut in New Zealand. He was caught by Sam Billings, a fellow debutant, for his first international wicket. He scored 28 runs against Adil Rashid during the fourth ODI of the same series, which was the second-highest run rate in England in a single over. On 23 June 2015, he made his Twenty20 International debut.

In March 2018, Santner was out of the Test series against England, after suffering a knee injury, ruling him out of action for six to nine months. The injury meant Santner’s planned spell in English county cricket with Derbyshire and Indian Premier League during 2018 had to be cancelled.

On 16 January, 2018. Santner bowled Pakistani cricketer Fakhar Zaman with a carrom ball, something he had been working on for some time, but only recently brought into his international repertoire.

Santner made his debut in the first Test match against Australia on 27 November 2015. This match was also the first ever day/night test. He was also the first player to make his Test debut in a Day Night Match. His debut match against Australia was his first. He scored a boundary with the first ball in his Test career.
