Missy Mazzoli, born October 27, 1980, is an American composer/pianist who is a member of Mannes College of Music’s composition faculty. Her operatic, chamber and orchestral work has been highly praised. She was one of two women who received a commission by the Metropolitan Opera House in 2018. Victoire is an electro-acoustic group that she founded and is the keyboard player. From 2012-2015 she was composer-in-residence at the Opera Company of Philadelphia, in collaboration with Gotham Chamber Opera and Music-Theater Group. G. Schirmer publishes her music. Mazzoli was awarded a 2015 Foundation for Contemporary Arts Grants to Artists Award and a Fulbright Grant to The Netherlands. In 2018, she was nominated for the Grammy Award for Best Classical Composition. In 2018, Mazzoli was named for a two-season term as the Mead Composer-in-Residence with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra.

Mazzoli’s first opera, Song from the Uproar: The Lives and Deaths of Isabelle Eberhardt, based on the life of Swiss explorer and writer Isabelle Eberhardt, premiered at New York venue The Kitchen in March 2012. The piece was created in collaboration with librettist Royce Vavrek, filmmaker Stephen Taylor and director Gia Forakis. The Wall Street Journal called this work “powerful and new” and The New York Times claimed that “in the electric surge of Ms. Mazzoli’s score you felt the joy, risk, and limitless potential of free spirits unbound.”

A 20-minute retelling of the story of Lot’s wife for voice, cello and electronics, SALT was performed at the 2012 BAM Next Wave Festival in Brooklyn and at UNC Chapel Hill. Composed for cellist Maya Beiser and vocalist Helga Davis, SALT was directed by Robert Woodruff and includes text by Erin Cressida Wilson.

Mazzoli has three albums with her music: Cathedral City, which she wrote for Victoire (2010); Song from the Uproar (2012), the original cast recording of her first opera (2012); and Vespers for a New Dark Age (2015). This was a work for Victoire, in collaboration Glenn Kotche (of Wilco), and the vocalists Virginia Kelsey, Martha Cluver and Melissa Hughes. Vespers for a New Dark Age, a Carnegie Hall commission, was premiered at the Hall in February 2014. All Mazzoli records were released by New Amsterdam Records, a Brooklyn-based label.
