Russian mathematician Misha Verbitsky (Russian Misha Verbitskii, born June 20, 1969 in Moscow), is Misha Verbitsky. He currently works at the Instituto Nacional de Matematica Pura e Aplicada in Rio de Janeiro. He is best known as a controversial critic and political activist, and independent music publisher.

Verbitsky, who graduated from Harvard with a PhD in history, moved to Russia where he became an associate of Eduard Limonov’s National Bolshevik Party. His articles appeared in many newspapers and magazines including Russkij Zhurnal and Zhurnal.Ru. Zavtra and Limonka. In 1998, the National Bolsheviks broke apart. Verbitsky joined the Eurasia Party under Alexandr Dugin. Verbitsky gave many talks at the Novyi Universitet (Dugin’s educational vehicle) and contributed to a number of his publications, such as Elementy or Vtorzhenie.

In 2012, Verbitsky was convicted without his knowledge of copyright infringement. He had posted a photograph of a Russian politician who claims that his beard is trademarked. The case has been appealed.

Verbitsky started UR-Realist Records in 1998 to publish controversial and experimental underground music. Over 40 albums have been produced since then, including the ones of Grazhdanskaya Oborona, punk legend, and Rada i Ternovnik, a neofolk group.

Verbitsky was a graduate of a Math class at the Moscow State School 56 in 1986 and has been active in mathematics ever since. His main interest in mathematics is differential geometry, particularly geometry of hyperkahler manifolds. He provided an analog of the global Torelli theory for hyperkahler manifolds as well as the mirror conjecture for the hyperkahler case. He was also a contributor to the theory Hodge structures. Under the supervision of David Kazhdan, his PhD thesis entitled Cohomology of compact Hyperkaehler Manifolds at Harvard University was presented in 1995. His positions included the Independent University of Moscow (since 1996), Glasgow University (2002-2007), and HSE Faculty of Mathematics(since 2010). He is currently employed at IMPA, Rio de Janeiro.

In December 2009, Yuri Kuklachev, the founder of the Moscow Cat Theatre, has filed a defamation lawsuit against Verbitsky. Kuklachev is seeking to recover alleged damages caused by Verbitsky quoting previously published allegations of Kuklachev’s animal cruelty in one of his blog posts; moreover, Kuklachev holds Verbitsky responsible for the expletive-ridden content of anonymous comments to the post in question.
