Mirwaiz Umar Farooq is one of the most popular and richest Politician who was born on March 23, 1973 in Srinagar, Jammu and Kashmir, India. “My family played an important role in the development of politics here. In the valley, in 1931, was founded the first party, the Muslim Conference. It was headed by my great-grandfather, Mirwaiz at the time. He was the one who introduced Sheikh Abdullah and his family to the world. Abdullah later founded the Jammu & Kashmir National Conference, and my grandfather was exiled in Pakistan, where he died.

Mirwaiz Maulid Farooq, leader of Awami Act Committee, was assassinated by unknown gunmen at the age 17 and he joined 23 Kashmiri pro freedom organizations to form the All Parties Hurriyat Conference. Mirwaiz Maulid Farooq’s funeral procession, 21 May 1990, saw 72 people, including four females, die in the vicinity of Islamia College. His body was then dropped in the middle. This raised public sentiment and gave Mirwaiz Umar Farooq leverage in his political efforts in the valley. He has been tireless in raising awareness about Kashmir issues internationally. Time magazine also listed him among its Asian Heroes. He believes that dialogue should be held with India and Pakistan as long as Kashmiri aspirations can be heard.

Mirwaiz Umar Farooq is married to Indian-American Sheeba Masoodi, youngest daughter of Sibtain Masoodi, an Indian doctor of Barzulla locality of Kashmir, which is famous for its Bone and Joints Hospital, settled in Buffalo, New York, in the United States, migrating in the early 70s. Mirwaiz is father to two daughters, Maryam and Zainab; and a son born on 11 February 2017.

Before joining Kashmir politics, Farooq was an alumnus of Burn Hall School in Srinagar. He had interests in computers and wanted to become a software engineer. He holds a postgraduate degree in Islamic Studies called ‘Moulvi Fazil’, and a PhD in same from Kashmir University, on the topic “Politico- Islamic role of Shah-e-Hamdan”, a 14th-century Islamic scholar who introduced Islam in the Valley.

On 30 May 1990, he was named the 14th Mirwaiz (Kashmiri title for traditional preacher of Muslims living in Kashmir). Rediff On The NeT’s Chindu Sreedharan interviewed he in 1997. He described the role Mirwaiz played in Kashmir politics:
