In 1983, he made his debut with the drama Creon’s Antigone. He spoke out strongly about political manipulation. Three years later, Night of the Gods was his second drama. The theme of Night of the Gods was the relationship between the artist’s and the totalitarian powers. The playwright then created a series of plays that focused on male-female relationships. His heroes were often historical figures. He created many complex female characters. His heroines are strong and emotionally charged. To date, he has written more than forty plays, including Death of an Actor and All About Women.
Since he was twenty-five, he has lived in Zagreb (Croatia). He is married Mladena Gavran and co-founded the GAVRAN Theatre in 2002 with her. Their son Jakov is an actor.
In 2010 he was named one of the nominees for the Astrid Lindgren Memorial Award.
