Kazoku Shinema (“Family Cinema”) won the prestigious Akutagawa prize. Gorudo Rasshu (“Gold Rush”) 1998) was also published. She is the author of a dozen books of essays, memoirs, and was a contributor to “en-taxi”, a literary quarterly. Inochi, her best-selling memoir (Ming, “Life”), was also made into a movie.
Her book, “Tokyo Ueno Station”, reflects her engagement in historical memory and margins. It includes themes of a migrant labourer from northeastern Japan as well as his work at the Olympic construction sites in Tokyo.
