Hatoum won the Jabuti Prize in Brazil three times for his best novel. He was awarded the Officier de l’Ordre des Arts et des Lettres by the French government in 2017.
In 1998, he was awarded the USP Doctorate in Literary Theory. He was unhappy with Manaus’ politics and decided to move to Sao Paulo. Milton published Dois Irmaos eleven years after his first novel was published. He published short stories in Brazilian newspapers and magazines between the publication of his first and second books.
Relato de um Certo Oriente, his first novel (“Tale of a Certain Orient”) won the Jabuti Prize 1989. Dois Irmaos, his second novel (“Two Brothers”) won another Jabuti Prize in 2000. It was translated into 12 languages and used for theater, television and comics. In 2005, his third novel Cinzas de Norte (“Ashes of the Amazon”) was awarded the Jabuti and the Portugal Telecom Prize for Literature. Bravo! APCA Awards. His novel Orfaos do Eldorado was adapt for cinema in 2008.
