Milton Becerra is one of the most popular and richest Sculptor who was born on August 10, 1951 in Táchira, Venezuela. He applies this knowledge to the development of irregular shapes called Hexagon Geometry or “Hexagonometry”, based on the arrangement of different modules in space based on Kasimir Malevich’s “White Cube” theory, and Ludwig Wittgenstein’s “Tractatus logico-philosophicus” concepts that investigates colors, their behavior in space and the division of forms through color ranges. Alfredo Boulton, a Venezuelan art historian, wrote that the works of Milton Becerra (1908-1995), “reflect a concern about volumes and strong structures that are accompanied by subtle chromatic characteristics.” So, we are in front of a solid, yet light, fragile object.

The European Land Art movement was born in London. It had very different concerns than those in Latin America. Land Art on the continent aims to transport the viewer to a place where nature is all alone, far from the bustle and influence of big cities. Latin American artists, and Milton Becerra has been consistent in this regard throughout his long career, intend Land Art reach for our roots to become part of the soil that sustains. Concerned about the environment, Milton Becerra conducted at this stage works like “A Blanket for the Meadow” in Caracas’ residential neighborhood, Lomas de Prados del Este, and “Analysis of a Process in Time”, in El Valle, where he deplores the environmental degradation and pollution. In the 1980s, Milton Becerra moved to Paris and developed an entirely new view of his art based on his research into the customs of the Amazonian Yanomamo tribe. His usual patterns and fabrics were given a modern twist. This led to his distinctive Site-specific art. It is recognized worldwide by this artist who was born in Venezuela’s Tachira. His use of organic elements such as rocks and fibers to create series like “Chin-cho-rro”, “Gotas,” (Drops 1990), and “Nidos,” (Nests 1995). Each of these works appeals to the concept and then he interprets and nurtures it with abstractist and geometric forms. The light waggling of inert body creates a formidable artistic piece. The Chin-cho rro and Esfera precolombina Site- specific Art. In 1995, the Museum of Contemporary Art and Design, San Jose, Costa Rica (Ms. Virginia Perez Ratton, 1950-2010) invited Milton Becerra to show the public his interpretation of traditional hammocks used in indigenous groups. He also rested on the stones as a burial bed for those who died from the Xawara endemic disease.

Milton Becerra is aware of the path he is on as an artist and proudly admits that he has brought uncommon Venezuelan art to all continents. With each piece he creates, it is impossible not to feel connected to his country, particularly his beloved Amazonas. Alfons Hug invited Milton Becerra to be the coordinator of the group exhibition “Art Amazon”, which was organized by Germany’s Goethe Institute at the Museum of Modern Art, Rio de Janeiro. He focused on the Amazon Federal Reserve, Yanomamo territory, the Upper Orinoco River and then he engaged in an experiment as an anthropological workshop to develop the theme “Xawara Yanomami XXI Century”. The sample was shown at three locations: the Museum of Art in Brasilia (Brazil), the Ludwig Museum of Art Forum International in Aachen (Germany), and Technische Sammlungen in Dresden (Germany).

Milton Becerra, a Venezuelan artist was born in 1951. He pioneered land art in Venezuela during the 1970s.

He graduated from Cristobal Rojas School for Arts (1972), under the Jesus Soto promotion. Milton Becerra worked as an assistant-partner between 1973 and 1980 in the workshops of Jesus Soto and Carlos Cruz-Diez, renowned masters. When he was still in school, he participated in his first group exhibition. He was an artist who studied art trends like Concrete, Neo and Kinetic, Generative, and “Op art”. He opened “Vibrohexagonal Volume”, his first solo show. It featured a sound environment that was presented at the Ateneo de Caracas. This won him the prize for the Third National Exhibition of Young Artists.

Three years later Milton Becerra presented at the Caracas Museum of Contemporary Art his work “Programmed Modules”, where he expresses his concerns towards land intervention by photography. Under this context, in the 70s, the early works of Milton Becerra come into view, placed in suburban areas of Caracas, on the blurred boundaries between city and forest, or high pastures and the streambeds, or in the city’s last streets and homes, or in the Colonia Tovar, or in La Mariposa dam. Although these were, at the time, actions and interventions, these pieces later became Photographic Series, and constitute—beyond themselves—his first plastic and poetic approach to the vision of nature and earth as sacred, conducive to mystical experiences and filled with the cultural memory of silenced or vanished peoples. This starting point characterizes later the context of his artworks. Milton Becerra is considered one of the pioneers of Land Art in Venezuela, a contemporary art movement that uses elements of nature or its environments to produce a reaction in the spectator observing the landscape presented and intervened by the artist.
