Milo Rau is one of the most popular and richest Writer who was born on January 25, 1977 in Bern, Switzerland. Milo Rau, born January 25, 1977, is a Swiss theatre director, journalist, essayist, and lecturer. In 2014, he was awarded the Swiss Theater Award.
Rau directed and wrote plays about the executions of Elena Ceausescu and Nicolae Ceausescu (The Final Hour of Elena Ceausescu), Romanian Communist leaders, and documented the role of a Rwandan radio station in the Rwandan genocide. He also presented Anders Breivik’s address to Oslo’s district court (Breivik’s Statement). Rau has also been involved in other overtly political activities, including establishing a self-declared interim administration in St. Gallen (Switzerland) and calling for foreigners to vote (City of Change); and staging show trials in Zurich and Moscow (the Moscow Trials). He convened a group of 60 victims, perpetrators and witnesses, as well as analysts, of the Second Congo War in 2015, the Congo Tribunal. The Guardian described it as “perhaps the most ambitious political theatre ever produced” while Die Zeit called it “an insane project.” Only art can save politics from failure. Rau’s controversial play Five Easy Pieces in 2016 was the first foreign production to receive the Special Prize from the Jury of Belgian Theatre Critics. It featured child actors playing out the crimes of Marc Dutroux, a child molester, and serial killer. The Berliner Theatertreffen invited the play in 2017.
In 2018, Rau opened his first season at the NTGent with the play Lam Gods, based on the Ghent Altarpiece and developed with his ensemble on the basis of their “Ghent Manifesto.” In addition, he began the series “Goldenes Buch/Golden Book,” publishing “programmatic texts about theater, aesthetics, and politics,” as well as texts about larger projects at NTGent, in cooperation with the Verbrecher Verlag [de] .
Rau is often referred to as “one of Europe’s most influential and important personalities.” Rau has been honored with the Schweizer Theaterpreis and the Horspielpreis der Kriegsblinden. He also received the jury prize at the festival Politik im Freien Theater. He was also the youngest ever winner of Preis des Internationalen Theaterinstituts [de]. In 2015, the Tages-Anzeiger wrote: “Milo Rau, whose documentary-theatrical explosions regularly fill houses, has managed to cast his art far out of the ivory tower.” Rau is also known as a “Scandal Director” because his controversial work is often accompanied with trials and public discussion. Breivik’s Statement was, for instance, banned from performing in the Nationaltheater Weimar or in Munich’s Haus der Kunst. Rau was also sued by the adopted son of the dictator, seeking a trademark on the family’s name. Russian authorities raided his Moscow Trials. Five Easy Pieces performances were also censored in Singapore and other German cities.
