She is the only child of a Glaswegian father and a Yorkshire mother. Her creativity and love for reading were passed down to her from her grandparents, who were avid readers and loved the arts. Her grandfather was a boxer, miner and wrestler. This brought her in contact with many of the ‘names’ from the 1970s and sparked a lifelong interest in the sport. Her maternal grandfather was a shipbuilder on the River Clyde, Glasgow.

In 1995, she married (divorced in 2000), and in 1998 she had her first child. She was also pregnant with two of her closest friends. She sent an agent her idea for a book about three pregnant women from Yorkshire who become pregnant simultaneously. It was based on her personal experience with joining ‘the club of women in the know’ after having babies and her experiences from parentcraft classes. This fund was established to support Claire Throssell’s children who were murdered/suicide by their father. She published a book of poetry, A Cat-Shaped Space in 2019, and all proceeds go to Yorkshire Cat Rescue.
