He was born in Moscow, 18 January 1961. Shishkin graduated in 1977 from the high school #59 located in Moscow’s Arbat district. He also studied German and English at the Moscow State Pedagogical Institute. After graduation, he worked as a street sweeper and journalist, school teacher and translator. AST Moscow published the novel Pismovnik (Letter-Book), in 2010. He won the main Russian literary Prize, Bolshaya kniga. The author also won the readers choice vote and the Big Book Prize. The English translation of Pismovnik’s works was published in 2013 by Quercus under the title The Light and the Dark.
