He also studied German and English at the Moscow State Pedagogical Institute. After graduation, he worked as a street sweeper and journalist, school teacher and translator. Shishkin immigrated to Switzerland in 1995 for his family reasons. In Zurich, he worked as an interpreter for refugees and was part of the Immigration Department. Shishkin was invited to Washington and Lee University (VA) as a guest professor (fall semester 2007 and 2009. Shishkin has lived with his family since 2011 in Kleinlutzel, near Basel. Shishkin was a guest at the DAAD Artists in Berlin Program in Berlin in 2012/13. He is a regular guest lecturer at universities and cultural institutions across Europe and the United States, and a frequent speaker on Television and Radio throughout many countries. Shishkin’s articles have appeared in The New York Times and The Wall Street Journal, The Guardian and Le Monde, The Independent and many other publications.

AST Moscow published the novel Pismovnik (Letter-Book), in 2010. He won the main Russian literary Prize, Bolshaya kniga. The author also won the readers choice vote and the Big Book Prize. The English translation of Pismovnik’s works was published in 2013 by Quercus under the title The Light and the Dark. The Wall Street Journal wrote that the author was a “bewitching potion of reality and fantasy, history and fable, and of lonely need, joyous consolation.” The Wall Street Journal praised Shishkin’s work: “Mr. The prose is evocative of history and the present, razor-sharp. It is a wonderful book. It is full of wonder. The Sunday Times described Shishkin, “a writer with a compelling understanding of the skull underneath the skin.” The New York Times Book Review called Shishkin, “a proud sentimentalist”. Russia will always receive the gold medal for synchronized sentimentalism and cynicism. “The Guardian stated that both novels attempted to portray multifaceted realities, and that there is often an unbearable intensity as metaphors sprout and writhe. The Maidenhair’s breathlessness is transformed into a measured brilliance in The Light and the Dark. The urgency of Shishkin’s mission is unaffected. “Life cannot be transformed into words unless it is made real.” Shishkin’s writing is both philosophically challenging and sensually precise.

In 2013, he pulled out of representing Russia at the Book Expo in the United States. Mikhail Shishkin declared in his Open Letter:

His prose has been praised, e.g., “Shishkin’s language is wonderfully lucid and concise. Without sounding archaic, it reaches over the heads of Tolstoy and Dostoevsky (whose relationship with the Russian language was often uneasy) to the tradition of Pushkin.” He says, “Bunin taught me not to compromise, and to go on believing in myself. Chekhov passed on his sense of humanity – that there can’t be any wholly negative characters in your text. And from Tolstoy I learned not to be afraid of being naïve.”

Many international awards have been given to translations of Mikhail Shishkin’s works, including the 2007 Grinzane Cavour Prize for Italy for Capelvenere (Italian Translation of Maidenhair), and the Prix du Meilleur Livre Etranger in Paris for the best foreign literary book. The International Literature Award (Haus der Kulturen der Welt for the best foreign novel 2011 for Venushaar (German Translation of Maidenhair). Shishkin was asked about his awards and replied, “No award has ever made an book better.”

Mikhail Pavlovich Shishkin (Russian pronunciation: Mikhail Pavlovich Shishkin, 18 January 1961) was a Russian writer. He is the only author to win the Russian Booker Prize, the Russian National Bestseller, and the Big Book Prize (2010). His books have been translated into thirty languages. He also writes in German.

Shishkin’s novel Maidenhair was published in 2005. It won the 2005 ]National Bestseller Award and the 2006 Big Book Award. Maya Kucherskaya, an author critic, said that Shishkin’s novel Maidenhair was a great story about a word, and a language, which becomes soft and obedient when it is in the hands of a Master. It can create a reality that is more impressive and convincing than the real world. In novels, the gap between a word or a fact, reality and its translation into human language, is a source of tension. Moscow News reported that the writer tried to link the Western literature’s achievements and love for verbal technique with Russian literature’s humanistic nature. His novel is about the most important topic: How to beat death with love. Critics were highly impressed with the English translation of Maidenhair published by Open Letter 2012 in 2012. The Dallas Morning News’ Daniel Kalder stated that Maidenhair was the best post-Soviet Russian novel he has ever read. It is true literature. This phenomenon is rare in any language. Boris Dralyuk, a writer for The Times Literary Supplement, stated that Shishkin’s prodigious erudition and lapidary phrasing as well as his penchant for generic play were prominent components of his art. These traits are what bind him to Nabokov. His faith in the power and potential of the written word is also evident. Stories change you, like mitts. Stories are living beings.

A country where power has been seized by a corrupt, criminal regime, where the state is a pyramid of thieves, where elections have become farce, where courts serve the authorities, not the law, where there are political prisoners, where state television has become a prostitute, where packs of impostors pass insane laws that are returning everyone to the Middle Ages – such a country cannot be my Russia. I want to and will represent another Russia, my Russia, a country free of impostors, a country with a state structure that defends the right of the individual, not the right to corruption, a country with a free media, free elections, and free people.
