Fishman received the Paul Klebnikov Award for Excellence in Journalism in November 2008. Fishman was with Klebnikov in his final moments after he was assaulted on a Moscow street.
In 2013 he became editor-in-chief of an online paper startup project for Moscow’s metropolitan area, Cityboom, and remained until it was closed in July 2014.
Since 2015 he has presented an annual program Conversation with Dimitry Medvedev on Dozhd TV. His weekly current affairs discussion show And so on with Mikhail Fishman appears on the same channel each Monday evening. That show discusses major events of the past seven days, puts them into context and examines their implications.
He joined the Russian edition of Newsweek in 2004 as a political commentator and was made deputy editor by chief editor Aleksandr Gordeev. Fishman was appointed political editor of Newsweek after a brief stint as special correspondent for Kommersant in Jan-Nov 2006. He succeeded Kyrill Axel Springer Russia as editor-in-chief of Russian Newsweek in Sept 2008. Fishman was the editor of Russian Newsweek from Sept 2008 to October 2010. The Russian subsidiary of German media company Axel Springer AG, Axel Springer Russia ended publication for “economic reasons”.
