Mikhail Beketov is one of the most popular and richest Russian journalist who was born on January 10, 1958 in Stavropol, Stavropol Krai, Russia. Mikhail Vasilyevich Beketov (Russian name Mikhail Vasil’evich Beketov; dated 10 January 1958 to 8 April 2013, Russian) was a Russian journalist. He was widely known for his coverage on the destruction of Khimki Forest in order to make way to the Moscow-Saint Petersburg motorway.
Beketov alleged that Vladimir Strelchenko (the local mayor) was involved in criminal activity related to the construction of the motorway. Strelchenko then sued Beketov in 2010 for libel. Beketov was unable to speak or walk and lost the case. According to authorities, Strelchenko was mayor for four more years before he resigned for unrelated reasons.
A series of protests were held in Moscow, and other locations, in the fall of 2010 against Russian journalists and civil activists being persecuted.

Beketov reported on the construction of the motorway as well as the potential environmental damage, especially in the vicinity of the Khimki Forest near Moscow. Yevgenia Churikova, an activist working to stop the destruction of the forest was also covered by Beketov. According to him, he was warned by local officials to stop his coverage. His car was set on fire, and his dog was killed. On 13 November 2008, he was attacked by unknown assailants. He suffered severe injuries including brain damage and the loss of his right hand and four fingers. He was attacked outside his Khimki home. Beketov had eight operations and was able to use a wheelchair.
A group of concerned citizens visited Mikhail Beketov’s home on 27 November 2010. They gave him 501 roses, and they held a concert. They collected the money from Internet sympathisers so that everyone could purchase one rose.
Beketov died at the age of 55 from cardiac arrest on 8 April 2013.
