Mikel Mason Robins, also known as “Mikey”, is an Australian comedian, writer and media personality. He was born 8 December 1961. His best-known work is the satirical game series Good News Week which aired on ABC and Network Ten from 1996 to 2000. The series was revived in February 2008, and he returned.

Robins was a breakfast radio host for Triple J, an Australian FM radio station. He lasted seven years and ended in 1999. Helen Razer (1996) and Paul McDermott (1997), Jen Oldershaw (1998), and The Sandman (Steve Abbott). In 2001, he was the co-host of Triple M’s breakfast program in Sydney with Amanda Keller and then Vega 95.3 with Tony Squires (and Rebecca Wilson).

In addition, he suffered from high cholesterol, borderline type 2 diabetes, abnormal liver function and poor mobility. In 2006, he underwent lapband bariatric surgery to combat his obesity. At the time, Robins weighed close to 150 kg; in an episode of Australian Story that aired on 3 July 2007, he announced that he had lost around 65 kg to date.

Robins claims he reacted to his father’s death by eating more and giving up sports, pointing to this as the beginning of his battle with obesity. His obesity was a frequent source of comedy in his performances, but also held serious health implications. In 2003, he was diagnosed with extreme sleep apnoea which caused him to stop breathing around 70 times an hour while he slept, due in large part to his weight.
