Mike Whalen, born November 4, 1960, is an American coach and athlete. He was a Wesleyan University collegiate wrestler, and a football player. He was the head football coach at Williams College for six years, winning four consecutive Little Three football championships. In March 2010, he was appointed as Wesleyan’s head football coach.

Whalen was undefeated in a 6-0 win against Wesleyan while at Williams College. Whalen was hired by Wesleyan in March 2010 as its head football coach, and assistant athletic director. Whalen stated to reporters that this would never have happened if he hadn’t come here. It was a huge draw for me to return home and to Wesleyan to see if this can be fixed. Whalen was 4-4 in his first year at Wesleyan. He lost close games to Trinity (24-21) and Middlebury (27-20), while also losing to Little Three rivals Williams, Amherst, and Amherst.

From 1996 to 2003, he was an assistant coach at Williams College. He also served as the offensive coordinator for three years. Whalen was also the head wrestling coach at the school from 1996 to 2004 while he was an assistant coach. He was appointed head football coach of Williams Ephs in February 2004. He succeeded Dick Farley, a College Football Hall of Fame Inductee. Whalen was Williams’ head coach for six years (2004-2009), where he had a record of 38-10 and a.792 winning percentage. He led Williams to an untied 8-1 record in 2006 and won the New England Small College Athletic Conference title. From 2005 to 2008, he also led Williams’ four consecutive Little Three championships.

Whalen is a native of Enfield in Connecticut. He attended Enrico Fermi high school. He was the State Class “LL”, Heavyweight Wrestling Champion as a senior and placed 3rd in the State Open Championships. Whalen was All-CCIL in football on offense and defense, and an All-State honorable note. Loomis Chaffee was his postgraduate year. He was the New England Prep Champion, 3rd in National Prep Wrestling Championships and 1st team All-Prep. Whalen would later attend Wesleyan University, Middletown, Connecticut. Before receiving his degree in 1983, he was an offensive lineman on the Wesleyan Cardinals football teams for four years. He was also the Wesleyan wrestling team captain, winning All-New England honors and All-American honors. He was the first New England wrestler ever to win four consecutive New England championships.

Whalen started his coaching career as a graduate assistant in wrestling and football at Springfield College. After earning a master’s in Physical Education from Springfield College, Whalen was appointed as assistant football coach at Penn. He was also part of the coaching staff of undefeated 1986 Penn teams. After working as an assistant coach at Lafayette University and Colgate University, Whalen was promoted to the role of associate head coach at Colgate.
