Michael Stowell, an English former professional goalkeeper, was born 19 April 1965. He is currently first team coach, goalkeeping coach at Leicester City and joint caretaker manager. He was a professional football player for twenty years, with Wolverhampton Wanderers, 11 of those being as a goalkeeper. He is married Rachel Stowell, a women’s soccer player.
He joined Second Division Manchester City in February 1988 on loan. He played 14 league and one FA Cup games for the club during this period. As a cover for Mark Grew’s injury, he joined Port Vale on a two-month loan agreement in October 1988. He kept goal in seven league and one cup games. From March 1989 until the end of the season, Wolverhampton Wanderers needed his services. His last loan stint was with Preston North End, February 1990. He played just two games.
He was given a testimonial match against Aston Villa in July 2000, and the following summer was released by the Midlanders. He was given a farewell appearance as a substitute on the last day of the 2000–01 season, against Queens Park Rangers. From 1998 to 2001 he also worked as a goalkeeping coach at the club’s youth academy.
Stowell joined Bristol City on a free transfer in July 2001, having chosen them over Wrexham. Here, he was mostly a reserve and part-time goalkeeping coach, but managed 25 league appearances spread over his four seasons at Ashton Gate, and was an unused substitute in the 2003 Football League Trophy Final. He retired in 2005, and turned down the offer of becoming an official goalkeeping coach at the club, having already found employment at Leicester City.
Stowell was denied first-team opportunities at Everton and had to make a series of loan moves to lower league teams. He was loaned out to Chester City in September 1987, and made his league debut against Aldershot with a 4-1 victory. After 15 more appearances with the Cheshire club, he joined York City’s Third Division rivals in December 1987. York saw him play six league games.

He was playing for North West Counties League side Leyland Motors and was offered a trial at Everton, which he accepted and then was offered a two-and-a half year contract. In December 1985, he signed for a five year stay at Goodison Park. He was not able to get past Neville Southall and was not allowed to play in the league. Instead, he played in the Central Reserve league. His only appearance for the “Toffees”, however, was in a Full Members Cup match against Millwall in which he kept an unofficial clean sheet.
After he was given a chance to play professionally at Preston North End in 1985 he impressed enough that he was offered a contract with Everton in the latter part of the year. He was also loaned to Manchester City, Chester City, York City and Manchester City during his five-year tenure. In 1990, he signed for Wolves permanently and made 378 league appearances. He signed with Bristol City in 2001 and retired from the game in 2005. In 2007, 2011, 2017, 2017 and 2019, he was the caretaker manager for Leicester City.
His two-month loan spell at Wolverhampton in the spring 1989 was to prove the most influential in terms of his career. Impressing during his seven games as Wolves won the Third Division championship, he was signed by manager Graham Turner in July 1990 for £275,000. He was named as Player of the Year for the 1990–91 season after making a total of 41 appearances. Stowell finally had the chance to gain regular first team games and became firmly established as Wolves’ main goalkeeper throughout the 1990s, playing 448 times in total as the club tried to break back into the top flight. During this time he fought off competition from stoppers such as Matt Murray, Steve Mautone, and Hans Segers. He eventually lost his first team place to Michael Oakes, who was signed for £500,000 in October 1999.
