Michael Anthony Rizzo, born December 14, 1960, is an American baseball executive. He is the general manager of Major League Baseball’s Washington Nationals and president of baseball operations.

The Diamondbacks chose Josh Byrnes to succeed Joe Garagiola Jr. Rizzo was then promoted to Assistant General Manager and Vice-President of Baseball Operations by Jim Bowden, July 24, 2006. This was the same time that Ted Lerner, a Washington-based investor group, took over ownership of the franchise from Major League Baseball.

Three days after Bowden’s sudden resignation on March 1, 2009, Rizzo was promoted on an interim basis by team president Stan Kasten. He was named the full-time Senior Vice President/General Manager on August 20, 2009. On October 19, 2010, Rizzo signed a five-year contract extension and was promoted to Executive Vice President of Baseball Operations and General Manager. The last two years of this contract were club options.

Rizzo decided to shut down ace pitcher Stephen Strasburg late in the 2012 season as he recovered from Tommy John surgery from the year before.

After a brief career as a minor league player, Rizzo moved into coaching and scouting. In 2000, he was appointed director of scouting at the Arizona Diamondbacks. Rizzo began his career with the Nationals as an assistant general manger in 2007. In 2009, he succeeded Jim Bowden as Nationals’ general manger and was elevated to team president in 2013. Rizzo and the Nationals won the franchise’s first World Series in 2019, beating the Houston Astros in seven.

Rizzo was drafted by the Angels in the 22nd round. He was the 554th overall pick in 1982 Major League Baseball Draft. From 1982 to 1984, he played for the Salem Angels (Class B Short Season), Peoria suns (Class AA) and Redwood Pioneers(Class A Advanced). The Angels released Rizzo after the 1984 season. His father advised him to attend college because he wasn’t skilled enough for the major leagues.

Rizzo was made an assistant coach at the University of Illinois. Larry Himes was the scout that drafted Rizzo and he also hired Rizzo to be a scout in the Upper Midwest. He was also a scout for the Boston Red Sox. Rizzo was a member of the Arizona Diamondbacks in 1998 when the franchise was established. He served as Director of Scouting from 2000 to 2006.

Rizzo grew up in Chicago as one of four children. His father, Phil, was a former minor league baseball player who drove a truck for the city and scouted for the California Angels on a part-time basis. The Angels made Phil Rizzo a full-time scout, as many of the players he identified reached the majors, and was eventually part of the inaugural induction class that entered the Professional Baseball Scouts Hall of Fame, in 2008.
