Tony Waddington managed Pejic’s career at Stoke City. Pejic was a key player in Stoke’s success in the 1970s, which saw them win the League Cup in 1972. He was a left-back and was well-known for his toughness. On one occasion, he was even suspended for five matches. In February 1975, he broke his leg and City lost its genuine First Division title challenge. In February 1977, he was sold to Everton at a PS135,000 price. He played three seasons there before joining Aston Villa. In 1980, he was injured and retired.
Under the stewardship of Gordon Lee, the “Toffees” finished in ninth place in 1976–77. They also reached the League Cup Final, but lost to Aston Villa at Old Trafford without Pejic in the team. He did though play 46 games in the 1977–78 season, as Everton finished third in the league. At Goodison Park, Pejic again suffered a broken leg this time against Leeds United in December 1978, and was limited to 26 appearances in the 1978–79 season.
He was replaced by John Bailey at Everton and in 1980 he joined Ron Saunders’s Aston Villa. But injuries again took their toll and he was limited to 12 appearances in the 1979–80 season before he decided to retire at Villa Park in 1980.

Pejic was raised in Chesterton, Newcastle-under-Lyme. He supported Stoke City since a young age. His father was a Yugoslavian Serbian immigrant miner. He took him to the Victoria Ground. Pejic played as a left-winger for Newcastle- under Lyme schools in his teens. In 1967, he signed professional forms with Stoke. Tony Waddington made the decision to make him a left-back. He made his debut at Upton Park against West Ham United after two years in reserve. This helped Stoke keep a clean slate against World Cup winner Geoff Hurst. He replaced Alex Elder, who was a disappointing player, and he made his way into the first team. Pejic, a strong athlete and compact at 5’8in tall, had a sweet left femur. Pejic was an ‘hard player’ who loved to let his opponent winger know that he was there with a scything attack. Pejic was a keen fitness fanatic and, unlike his Stoke teammates, had a farm in Leek.
In 1969-70, he was a regular member of the Stoke squad and in the early 1970s. Stoke had a great time, reaching the semi-finals of the FA Cup twice, and winning the League Cup in 1972. The final saw him play the full ninety minutes, with the “Potters”, beating Chelsea 2-1 at Wembley. This was thanks to goals by Terry Conroy (and George Eastham). Pejic participated in more than 100 senior matches over two seasons (1971-71 and 1972-72). In 1974, he was called up to the England national team. He played in four matches but was replaced by Alec Lindsay from Liverpool. Pejic was often sent off during his time at Stoke and was even suspended by the FA for five matches. In February 1975, he broke his leg and three other players sustained injuries that caused Stoke’s attempt to win the First Division title in 1974-1975 to be canceled. After a strong storm ravaged the area, the Butler Street stand roof at Victoria Ground fell to the ground in January 1976. The club had to sell its most valuable players. Pejic was sold and he joined Everton for PS135,000.
Pejic won eight caps for the England under-23 team, before Sir Alf Ramsey handed him his full England debut in a friendly against Portugal in Lisbon on 3 April 1974; the game finished 0–0. After appearances against Wales and Northern Ireland, he won his fourth and final cap on 18 May 1974, in a 2–0 defeat to Scotland at Hampden Park that left England to share the 1973–74 British Home Championship. Ramsey’s successor, Joe Mercer, dropped him in favour of Alec Lindsay.
