Born 26 September 1971, Michael Paradinas is an English electronic musician. He was a part of the electronic style intelligent dancing music (IDM), which he recorded on Rephlex Records as well as Reflective Records. Lunatic Harness, his critically-acclaimed 1997 album that helped to define drill ‘n bass, was also his most popular release with over 100,000 copies sold. Planet Mu, which he founded in 1995, is his record label. He has championed footwork and juke.

Paradinas changed his style again in 1997, mixing electronic music with drum’n’bass. This was a similar path to Squarepusher’s and Aphex Twin’s. He was also on tour with Bjork during this time. Bjork was the inspiration for 1999’s album Royal Astronomy. It featured unusual vocals, strings, and breakbeat. His albums were all released on Astralwerks, a more mainstream American label.

Paradinas was recording during this time on his own and with synthesizers as well as a four-track recorder. Blue Innocence disbanded in 1995 after a performance at London’s “The Orange”. Paradinas bought sequencing software from Francis Naughton, the bass player. They re-recorded some older Paradinas tracks. It was supposed to be released after the material was played by Mark Pritchard (the duo behind Global Communication) and Tom Middleton (the heads of Evolution Records), but Pritchard & Middleton later had to cancel their agreement due to recording commitments. Paradinas was fortunate to have Richard D. James (a.k.a. Aphex Twin had also heard the tracks, and agreed to release their music via Rephlex Records as m-Ziq.

Paradinas was a Charing Cross native. He began playing keyboards in the early 1980s and enjoyed new wave music like Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark and Heaven 17 as well as the early Human League. In the mid-1980s, he joined several bands and spent eight years as a keyboard player for Blue Innocence.

Rocket Goldstar was founded by Naughton after Naughton left mZiq. Bluff Limbo, a second album, was to be released in 1994. However, only 1000 copies were printed. Rephlex reissued it in 1996, after Paradinas served papers. Paradinas’s debut major-label release was later in 1994 after he completed a remix project with Virgin Records, The Auteurs Vs. m-Ziq. This remix EP was for the britpop group the Auteurs. Paradinas’s remixes sounded very different from the original song, which was a common practice among experimental electronic musicians at that time.

Even though the EP was hardly a high sales success, Virgin signed up Paradinas and gave him his own sublabel, Planet Mu, to release his own work and to develop similar-minded artists. (Paradinas later broke with Virgin and in 1998 established Planet Mu as his own independent label.) Written into his own contract was a provision for unlimited recording under different names, and during 1995 Paradinas unveiled three aliases and released many albums within less than a year. The neo-electro music label Clear released his debut single under the alias Tusken Raiders (named after the Star Wars species) early in the year. Clear Records also released the first Paradinas alias full-length album, Jake Slazenger MakesARacket, later in 1995. Although they were still audible, the LP ignored the electro influences in favour of some synthesizer figures and the previously unheard influence of jazz-funk. Paradinas continued to release solo albums under the above-mentioned names as well as Gary Moscheles, and a one-time collaboration with Aphex Twin under the Mike & Rich moniker.
