May, born 1953, is an American business executive, skier, and enthusiast for other sports. He was blinded at three years old by a chemical blast. However, he regained some vision at 46 after cornea transplants and a pioneering stem-cell procedure by Daniel Goodman, a San Francisco ophthalmologist. May established the Sendero Group in Davis (California), United States (USA) in 1999. This group employs many people who are blind or visually impaired. Sendero is a pioneer in accessible GPS technology for blind people. In 2004, and 2009, the Consumer Electronics Show awarded the “Innovation Honoree” title to Sendero Group for its GPS technology.

Three years after May’s eye surgery, 2003 was the third year of mixed results. According to May, he was unable to see three-dimensionally and could not recognize his family members by their faces.

In 2006, journalist Robert Kurson wrote a book on May that was expanded from an article Kurson wrote for Esquire magazine. The book, Crashing Through: A True Story of Risk, Adventure and the Man Who Dared to See, was released on May 15, 2007.

Interest was expressed within the film industry regarding the translation of May’s story into a motion picture, and, as of July 2011, Stone Village Productions and DRO Entertainment owned the rights to the film adaptation of Kurson’s book. Emmy Award-winning screenwriter, Adam Mazer, had been employed to write the script.

May’s vision was not clear at three years old. His brain was not fully exposed to the light and images of the environment. This impairment caused problems in daily living. Cohen et al. Cohen et al. (1997) proposed that early blindness can lead to a poor development of the visual cortex and a decrease in somatosensory growth. Cohen’s study suggested that May’s long-term blindness can affect his ability to distinguish male and female faces and recognize images and pictures. May’s vision has not completely recovered from the operation on his right eye. He had been blind for forty years. Thinus-Blanc (1997) suggests that people who become blind in their early years of life have limited abilities in spatial representation. May’s visual cortex was affected by the early loss of vision. His visual cortex cells were not used to stimuli.
