Michael James Hesson ONZM, a New Zealand cricket coach, was born 30 October 1974. He is the former head coach for the New Zealand cricket team. He has also coached Otago in NZ cricket domestic cricket, as well as Argentina and Kenya. Hesson was named New Zealand’s head coach on 20 July 2012. He took over from John Wright during their tour to India in August. Later extensions to his contract would have allowed him to continue through the 2019 Cricket World Cup. However, Hesson announced his resignation as the Director of Cricket for Royal Challengers Bangalore in June 2018.
Hesson was New Zealand’s longest-serving cricket coach. Hesson was a calm, brilliant manager, who built a reputation for creating and maintaining a positive team culture while leading the BlackCaps to unparalleled success. Hesson was elected as a representative of the International Cricket Council Cricket Committee in May 2018.
Despite his contract running until the end of 2019 Cricket World Cup, Hesson announced his resignation in June 2018. On January 3 2019, Hesson joined the Sky Sports commentary team for the home white ball series.
Prior to his appointment by New Zealand, he had served as Kenya’s coach, citing “security concerns” as the reason for his resignation.

Hesson’s team won 21 Tests, lost 19 and drew 13 during his reign, which lasted from August 2012 to April 2018. The 1980s saw 59 Tests, of which 17 were won and 15 lost, and 27 were drawn. Hesson was responsible for 112 ODIs that were completed. Hesson won 65, lost 46 and tied. The 1980s results had 122 played, 56 wins and 66 losses. Twenty20 internationals, which were not played in the 1980s, had 56 games completed, with 30 victories, 24 losses, and two tie.
