Michael William Hegman, born January 17, 1953, is an ex-American football linebacker in National Football League for Dallas Cowboys. He played college football for Tennessee State University.
He made an unusual entry into the NFL in 1976. He spent most of his four seasons on special teams and as an outside linebacker to Thomas “Hollywood”, Henderson, and D. D. Lewis. He made his most memorable play during Super Bowl XIII against Pittsburgh Steelers. He took the ball from Terry Bradshaw, and scored on a 37-yard fumble returned for a touchdown.
During the 1980 offseason, he faced prosecution on a charge of forging a friend’s name on $10,534 worth of checks. The case was dismissed after he paid the money he owed, with the help of players like Cliff Harris, Roger Staubach, Bob Breunig and Tony Dorsett, who gave $2,000 dollars each to help cover the debt.
In 1988, he suffered cartilage tear in his right knee during the preseason and was placed on the injured reserve list. He was released as part of a youth movement on October 25.
It was wrongly believed that Hegman had one year of eligibility left after his junior season. Hegman was drafted by the Dallas Cowboys in what became known as the Dirty Dozen Draft. He was forced to sit out the remainder of 1975 college football season after he was declared ineligible by the NCAA. He was permitted to participate in the Senior Bowl, even though he had to sit out the majority of the season.
