Walls, after years of struggle against weight gain, retired in 2002. He made a brief comeback at Nad al Sheba Racecourse in Dubai in 2003 before retiring permanently.

1992 was a tough year for Mickey Walls because of a serious injury. He was still the top jockey at Greenwood Spring Meet, but he broke his leg in a racing accident. This kept him from racing for the remainder of the season. He was back in form again and was the leading jockey for Woodbine Racetrack in 1993. Walls raced at several tracks in the United States, including Arlington Park and Churchill Downs, Fair Grounds Race Course and Keeneland. In 1996, Walls returned to Canada to win the last two legs of the Canadian Triple Crown Series. He captured the Prince of Wales Stakes aboard Stephanotis and then the Breeders Stakes aboard Chief Bearhart, Canada’s best turf runner. In 1999, Mickey Walls rode Woodcarver, Canada’s most prestigious race, to victory in The Queen’s Plate. At sixteen years old, he began professional riding in 1990. He competed at Exhibition Park in Vancouver. He was immediately successful and he moved east to Toronto in the fall to ride at Woodbine Racetrack, then Greenwood Raceway. There he was the top jockey at the Autumn Meet. Walls received the Sovereign Award for 1990 Canadian Champion Apprentice Jockey.

In 1991, Mickey Walls, still an apprentice in Canada was still winning races. He set a Canadian record with 231, setting a Canadian record for the most races won by an apprentice jockey. He also won more races at Woodbine Racetrack and he earned more purse money than any other jockey. He won a second riding title at the Greenwood Raceway Spring Meet. He was the first apprentice jockey to win the Sovereign Award as well as the Eclipse Award from the United States in 1991. He was also voted Champion Jockey of Canada.

In 2008, Mickey Walls was inducted in the British Columbia Thoroughbred Hall of Fame and was a nominee for the Canadian Horse Racing Hall of Fame in 2009. In June 2013, he won the Avelino Gomez Memorial Award for significant contributions to the sport of thoroughbred horse racing. Walls was later named into the Canadian Horse Racing Hall of Fame in 2019.
