However, he was forced to wait an additional week by Norwich before signing. Stockwell opted instead to join Colchester United.

Micky Stockwell was a part of the highly successful youth system established by Sir Bobby Robson in Ipswich Town. He represented England at Youth level. He was a highly-rated player in his Ipswich Town playing career. Stockwell played 610 Ipswich games between 1982 and 2000, scoring 44 goals. Stockwell began his career with Ipswich under Sir Bobby Robson in the 1980s. He was a first-team player by the end of the 1980s. He was a key player in the 1991/1992 Second Division championship team that won and he also played in the first season of English Premiership. Ipswich granted Micky Stockwell a testimonial match in 1994. He was a Premiership player and one of Ipswich’s most highly rated players before Ipswich were relegated 1995. Stockwell was a Tractor Boys mainstay for the rest of the 1990s, but he failed to win the First Division Playoffs in 1996/97/98, 1997/98, and 1998/99. Stockwell was released after his final season with Ipswich. He was part of the team which won the First Division Playoffs in 1999/00. He was an Ipswich player and was a FA Cup quarter-finalist as well as a League Cup semi-finalist.

In 2000, Micky Stockwell signed with Colchester and immediately made an impression. He played 145 games and scored 24 goals for Colchester. He played a key role in Phil Parkinson’s Colchester team, until he was forced to retire in 2003 after sustaining a serious back injury. Micky Stockwell ended his football career after playing in over 700 games and scoring 68 goals.

After retirement from the professional game, in 2003 he first became a player- coach at Heybridge Swifts but left after a couple of months. He then joined Woodbridge Town as a player, before later becoming in 2004 the manager. He was manager until October 2007 where Mick and Woodbridge town came to a mutual agreement to part company.
